Obituary for Everal E. "Sonny" Butterfield
Everal E. “Sonny” Butterfield, age 89, passed away on March 9, 2019, at Riverstone Hospice House in Billings, MT from complications of environmental COPD.

Everal was born on December 21, 1929 on the family farm near Hunter, KS to parents Fred T. Butterfield and Edna Mae Francis Butterfield, the oldest of four children. He was nicknamed Sonny by an old bachelor at the age of six, a name he used the rest of his life. He lived on the family farm until he was twelve until the depression took the farm and they moved to Wichita, Kansas. He attended schools in and around the area (Levent and Tippen, KS) before leaving school at age 17 to pursue his dream of being a cowboy. He cowboyed in Arizona, and New Mexico before heading north to Wyoming at age 19. He rodeoed and worked in and around Wyoming until taking a job in Wyola, Montana around 1950.
He married Josephine Stockhouse on July 28, 1952. He was drafted into the Army in 1954, stationed in Ft. Ustis, VA, honorably discharged in 1956. He then went to work on the Jim Brown Ranch near Lodge Grass, MT, then to the Chandler Ranch east of Roundup. In 1959, the couple moved to Ashland, KS. They returned to Roundup in 1963, working for the Johnson-Ekern Ranch until 1965. He then began working at the Pronghorn Ranch, working there for 32 years until retiring and moving to town in 1997 and becoming a part-time brand inspector. Sonny owned Custom Rifle shop both on the ranch and in town and concentrated his retirement years in that business.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Josephine, of Roundup; his daughters, Tina Shields, of Winston Salem, NC, Teresa Fauth (Brad) of Roundup, Twyla Lister (Jim), of Fromberg, MT and Justine Walker, Temecula, CA, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, and his brother Gary Butterfield (Bonnie) of Wichita, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Joan and Beverly.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday, March 18, 11 a.m., at the Masonic Temple, 405 Main St, in Roundup with a luncheon to follow. Memorial Donations can be made in honor of Sonny to Riverstone Health Hospice, 2230 Mission Way, Billings, MT 59102.
