Obituary for Thomas John Goodpaster
Thomas John Goodpaster, 45, went to be with his Higher Power on May 24th, 2017 at his homestead in the beautiful Bull Mountains near Roundup, MT.
Tom was born July 4, 1971 to his wonderful parents Steve and Sandy Hovden Goodpaster in Lewistown, MT.
Raised in Lewistown where he attended St. Leo’s Catholic School until he moved to Bozeman, MT with his parents and little sister Joy. Tom graduated from Bozeman High School in 1989. Shortly after he enlisted in the U.S. Army and went and fought for his country in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm until he returned to his home in Bozeman in 1991. While back in Bozeman he attended MSU for 13 years studying engineering, worked odd jobs and alongside his father Steve in the countertop business until 2009.
He moved shortly after to Billings, MT where he met his wife Renee in 2010. On August 10th, 2013 Tom and Renee married in Gallatin County in front of many family and friends. Tom and Renee worked side by side for his construction company until his death. They moved to the beautiful Bull Mountains outside of Roundup, MT in 2016 to build their dream home and spend the rest of life together surrounded by love, peace and nature.
Tom loved his mountains especially being in the Belts where he loved to camp, build big campfires and ride his ATV under the big Montana Sky. He loved fishing, going gold panning, searching for Yogo sapphires, climbing mountains or just being outside doing something. He was a loving, humble and kind man that would do anything for his family and friends. His love for his family ran deep on both sides of his family (Goodpasters and Hovden). Family meant everything to him. He loved all animals big or small. He thought of himself as the animal whisperer because they loved him too.
Tom joins his family in Heaven where they are welcoming him with open arms. Grandparents Jack and Fran Goodpaster, Grandpa Leroy Hovden, Aunt Patti Hovden, Aunt Nancy Siegle , Uncle Terry Kelly, Uncle John Rosenberg, Uncle “Big” Bob Gilman, Cousin Scotty Ricker, Cousin Britany McCoy, Father in law George Stark and stepson Patrick Bowen and Buddy Rick.
Tom will be lovingly remembered by both parents Steve and Sandy Goodpaster; sister Joy (Wade) Goodpaster and nephews Collin and Miles Schmaing of Belgrade. Grandma Pearl Hovden of Lewistown, MT and many Aunties, Uncles and Cousins. His wife Renee Goodpaster of Roundup, his stepchildren Shawn Sampson of MT and Eric Bowen of OK, Danielle (Michael) Woodie and grandbaby Sophia of FL.

A gathering will be held at the Elks Lodge #456 in Lewistown, MT on July 8th at 1:00 p.m. to reminisce, grieve, support each other and celebrate Tom’s life.
