Obituary for Sylvia Marie Goffena
Sylvia Marie Goffena was born, May 2, 1954, the ninth child of Paul and Mary Goffena. She peacefully passed away, January 30, 2024 at Eagle Cliff Manor. She attended grade school at the one room school in Delphia, until it closed. She then finished her primary education in Roundup Central School.
She was involved in a horse accident in September of 1966, when she was 12 years old, resulting in a traumatic brain injury, leaving her with cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and schizophrenia for which she took medication for the rest of her life.
Sylvia graduation from Roundup High School and went to work at Roundup Memorial Hospital in housekeeping. She worked as a home health aide helping Jack and Dora Jarett stay in their home when they were elderly. She also worked at the Busy Bee Café as a dishwasher.
She married Herbert Tilly in the spring of 1981. This was a short union, ending in August 1982.
Sylvia spend many years living on the ranch helping her parents. She enjoyed baking “Schwann’s” frozen ready to bake cookies, so her brothers had cookies when they came to the house for a break.
After her parents passed away she lived with her sister, Cecelia and her husband Dallas. Her sister Mary and Kay Sanner stayed with Sylvia when they were needed.
Her Life was not easy, but she found joy in simple things; walking, ceramic painting, making beaded necklaces, doing jigsaw puzzles, coloring, and watching TV. She looked forward to lunches at the Senior Center and playing BINGO. She loved her kitty cats and above all, singing. She sang for many years in St. Benedict’s Choir.
Sylvia gave her life to the Lord at an early age and spend much time at church and in prayer. She had a special love for praying The Rosary.
She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Mary, all of her aunts and uncles and several cousins.
Sylvia is survived by her siblings: Toni (Orville) Moore, Frank (Suz) Goffena, Mary (Richard) Mac Catherine, Vince (Arlene) Goffena, Glenn (Dorothy) Goffena, Alice (Bill) Sullenger, Ralph (Susie) Goffena, Cecelia (Dallas) Teini, Paul E. (Brenda) Goffena, George (Cheryl) Goffena, her daughter, Katrina Heffernman, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as numerous cousins.
Vigil services will be Monday, February 12, 2024 at 6:00 pm, and on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 a funeral mass at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, at 11 am. Luncheon to follow. Burial in Goffena Family Cemetery on the ranch.
