Obituary for Lily Gladys Meyer
Lily Gladys Meyer (80) passed away peacefully Thursday morning, June 24, at her son’s home in Billings surrounded by loved ones. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and nurse. She was born on February 25, 1941 in Sinton, Texas to Harry (Tex) and Ruth Saunders. She was the eldest of 5 siblings and the only sister. When she was young, the family moved to Roundup, MT where she grew up and graduated from Roundup High School in 1959. Having already started her training as a nurse, she went on to nursing school at the Columbus School of Nursing in Great Falls and returned to work at Roundup Memorial Hospital as a nurse where she met Harlan Meyer, who was a hospital engineer. They married in September of 1963. After the birth of their first child, Michael, they moved to Gillette, WY where she worked at Campbell County Memorial Hospital and eventually offered the job as the head nurse at Pioneer Manor and became the youngest head nurse in a nursing facility in the U.S. at that time. In 1972, she was selected to appear in that year’s edition of “Outstanding Young Women of America” in recognition of outstanding ability, accomplishments and service.
In 1973, she took a job at the Veteran’s Hospital in Sheridan, WY and the family moved to Ranchester, WY a year later. In 1981, she took a position back at Roundup Memorial, where she stayed for a number of years eventually taking her last job at St. Vincent’s Healthcare in Billings until retirement. She retired with over 50 years of service as a nurse including time to travel with a team to help with the medical needs of Katrina victims. She retired to be a full-time grandma (now that she was finally a grandma) and to spend time with family, friends and her cats.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Harlan; daughter Deanne; and her brother, Corky Saunders and his wife Billie.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Karen) Meyer of Billings and grandchildren Haniya, Abbie, Michael, Jr. and Joshua; ‘adopted’ son Joe Majenski of Palm Springs, CA; her brothers, Richard Saunders of Billings, Allen (Char) Saunders of Roundup and Ron (Anita) Saunders of Dayton, OH and many nieces, nephews and friends.
