Gordon W. Charlton, 82, of Roundup, MT passed away September 12th, 2022 at his home with loved ones by his side.
Gordon was born in Billings, MT on June 29th, 1940 to Harold and Evelyn Buckey Charlton. He attended school in Roundup, graduating in 1958. Soon after high school, he spent 3 seasons working as an outfitter for Glen Roberts in the Bob Marshall Wilderness guiding pack mule and hunting expeditions. In 1962 he enlisted in the Army and was deployed overseas working as a mechanic in a field hospital for 3 years in Italy. Gordon was honorably discharged and returned to Roundup. While working at the fill-up station on Main, his friends Donny and Joann Tomlin introduced him to Jane Anderson who worked at the show hall right across the street. She turned out to be the love of his life and on June 8, 1968 they got married and moved “out north”. In 1970 when the Grazing Association was first formed, he became its first manager.
Gordon and Janie had 2 children, Amy Jane and Todd William. One month after Todd was born, they moved to town and he started working for the state highway department where he was employed until his retirement at the age of 62 in 2002. Janie passed away in 1998 and Gordon moved back out to the country. He especially enjoyed the close-knit family of neighbors he had on West Parrot Creek and was always willing to lend his tractor to anyone in need.
Gordon's most notable feature was his Charlton height. He stood 6'3" but his towering presence was never intimidating. He was a kind and gentle man who loved babies and teasing little kids in fun. He loved to laugh and spend time with friends and family. A man of integrity and virtue we could all aspire to, he will be sorely missed by many.
