Faye Rose Louise (McCleary) Turley, 95, of Billings, Montana, was granted the
greatest wish of her final years, and joined her husband John, in Heaven, on
December 6, 2024. Faye passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by
family.
Faye Rose was born October 22, 1929, in Roundup, Montana, to John P.
McCleary and Josephine (McClain) McCleary. She graduated from Musselshell
High School and received her Associates Degree in teaching from the College of
Great Falls. Faye married her high school sweetheart, John E. Turley, Jr., on
August 15, 1952, at the Catholic Church in Musselshell and the couple started
their lives together living in Bozeman, Montana, where John attended Montana
State University and Faye worked as a secretary. They welcomed their first child,
Jim, the following August. After graduating from MSU, John was commissioned
in the US Air Force, and the couple moved the family to Tuscon, Arizona. Later
John was transferred to Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA, where their
daughter, Marty Jo, joined the family in 1955. When John’s commission was up
they moved back to the family ranch in Musselshell, and soon thereafter son, Bret
(1959), and daughter, Millie (1960), arrived to make their family complete.
Faye decided to go back to college at Eastern Montana College in Billings to earn
her Bachelor’s Degree, when she learned that the Musselshell High School would
be closing. She and John wanted their children to have the benefit of living in
town to attend school in Roudup, so Faye taught 5th Grade at Roundup Elementary
School and lived in town with the kids for 10 years traveling back and forth to the
ranch on weekends, holidays and summers until their youngest child graduated
from high school in 1978.
Faye retired from teaching and returned to being a full time ranch wife, until she
and John left the ranch to “retire” in the big city and moved to Billings in 1983.
Never one to be idle for long, while in Billings Faye worked several different jobs,
in sales at Hart Albins, then as a secretary for Fischer & Assoc., and as a
secretary/receptionist for Veeder & Broeder, P.C. making friends and leaving a
lasting impression on her many co-workers along the way. She also spent time
traveling and enjoyed trips abroad with her cousin Jane, including one special trip
to Paris about which she often reminisced.
In their later years together, Faye and John loved traveling in their 5th wheel
trailer, going south in the winter, trekking up to Alaska, and countless other
adventures with their dog, Fritz, in tow. John was diagnosed with cancer in 2009
and passed away in August of 2010. Finding herself without the love of her life
after 58 years of marriage proved difficult to navigate, but Faye was always a
fighter. She spent her time with family and friends, keeping all in line and
enjoying her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were her
greatest joy to the end.
Faye was preceded in death by her husband, John. Survivors include her sister-inlaw,
Mary Cooley, children, Jim (Rita) Turley, Marty Jo (Allan) Holliday, Bret
(Michele) Turley, and Millie (Doug) Vescovi, eight grandchildren, six
grandchildren-in-law, twelve great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
