Obituary for Ethel Marie Polich
Ethel Marie Gecho Polich
Our beautiful, radiant, fun loving, wonderful Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, and Friend passed away November 10, 2016 from complications of dementia.
She was born in Absher, Montana, a coal mining community east of Roundup, on July 4, 1922 to Frank Gecho and Mary May Garrick. Her Mother, Mary, would always refer to her kids, “as her Tribe,” when corresponding with relatives. Mom was the fifth child of six children. Mom said “no wonder her Mom called the kids her tribe”. She remembered her parents saying the Fourth of July fireworks were especially for her. Mom loved to ride trains as a young child, she and siblings, along with their Mother, would travel to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to visit relatives and grandparents.
The Gecho children lost their father, November, 1929 and their mother December 23, 1930. The youngest brother went to Canada to live with grandparents while the others lived with an aunt and uncle for a short period of time. The older siblings left to live elsewhere, Mom and her brother Mickey were sent to Foster Care. They remained in Foster Care until their sister, Esther, was able to give them a permanent home.
July 4, 1940 brought new fireworks into Mom’s life. She and Joe Polich were married at Columbus, Montana. They had two daughters, JoAnn (Alvin) Mills and Georgia (Will) Juhl. Dad passed away January 1974. They had been married for 34 years.
Mom worked at Van Dykes Grocery for Bill and Ruth Amdor from 1965 until she retired in 1984. She enjoyed working at the store and visiting with the customers. Her free time was spent watching her grandson’s sporting events, particularly baseball games. She and her dearest friend, Catherine Golob, would take in as many games as they could, watching each other’s grandsons “play ball”. The games were special moments, witnessing these two wonderful ladies still as close as they were in their early childhood days.
In the end, time continues on. Our children enter adulthood and leave their parent’s home. We all grow older and family and friends pass away. Next, it’s our turn at the plate. Goodbye Mom. We love and miss you every day.
Preceding Mom in death were parents, Frank and Mary Gecho, husband, Joe Polich, brothers, Frank, Joe, Mickey, and John Gecho, sister Esther Coghill, and son-in-law Alvin Mills.
She is survived by her daughters JoAnn Mills and Georgia (Will) Juhl, grandsons Michael and Jay (Tanya) Mills, great grandchildren Megan, Melanie, Hayden, and Andrew Mills, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Donations may be made to the Rimrock Humane Society, care of Sandy Church, Roundup, Montana.
Services will be held at Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church, October 7, 2017 at 1:30 P.M. Luncheon will follow after graveside service.
