Obituary for E. Keith Stensvad
Keith's heavenly father called him home on October 13, 2015. He was born to Otto and Lillian (King) Stensvad, December 2nd, 1930 in Miles City, Montana. He spent his life on the family ranch North of Melstone other than a brief move to Oregon during the depression years. He graduated from Melstone School and obtained his Associates degree in agriculture from Montana State University. He returned to the ranch and married his high school sweetheart, Myrtle Stevenson on June 5th, 1954. They were blessed with four children: Gale, Baby Glen, Glenda, and Gena. Keith loved raising cattle and his family. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and strived to lead his life every day according to his faith. Known as "Grandpa" to many he had a special bond with his grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He was dedicated to the improvement of irrigation on the lower Musselshell River and was standing on the river bank when the first Deadman's Basin irrigation storage water arrived in the Melstone area. He served as secretary, president and manager on the Delphia-Melstone Canal Board for 34 years. During those years he also served on the Deadman's Basin Board, the Montana Water User's Association, and was on the State Water Judge advisory board. Testifying at legislature and obtaining signatures on the river basin, he was a driving force behind the Musselshell River Enforcement Act. After retiring from the Canal, Keith continued to help out on the ranch. He spent countless hours and miles in his red pickup keeping an eye on things, visiting with the neighbors, and taking thousands of pictures. He is survived by his beloved wife Myrtle of 61 years, daughters Gena (Kelly) Allen and Glenda (Steve) O'Brien, brother Douglas Stensvad, his special nephew Aaron Stensvad, 8 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sons Gale and Glen, his sister Connie Hoffman, and his brother Larry Stensvad. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 23rd at the Melstone High School Gym with burial following at the Melstone Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Faith Lutheran Church or Melstone EMTs. Wier Funeral Home of Roundup is in charge of arrangements.
