Obituary for Dawn Darlene Gatchell
Dawn Darlene Gatchell passed away from this life into her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ’s presence on Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 2025 at the age of 86 in Billings, Montana.
She was born in Roundup, Montana on September 30, 1939 to Virgil and Mabel Cross, the first born of four children.
Darlene started first grade going by her birth name, Dawn, until her parents convinced her teacher to let her go by her middle name, Darlene, because her classmates thought she was being called “Don” a boys’ name.
She bore six children Debra, Ken, Patrick, Gregory, Darrell and Frank. Two being born while she lived in Japan. She worked in Missoula for a few years. Her last employment being Montana Rescue Mission until age of 82. Before she needed full time care, she enjoyed living with her youngest son and daughter in law. She really enjoyed being surrounded by many grandchildren.
Last summer she got to see four of her children all together for the first time in many years.
Darlene loved her family very much and enjoyed their numerous gatherings together. She loved to visit as well as we loved visiting with her. She was so kind and gentle.
Darlene was a Mother to six children, 14 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Patrick and Darrell Weigum; one grandson, Nicho Sotelo; sister, Sharon McHenry; and brother, Bob Cross.
She is survived by Debbie Sotelo , WY, Ken (Sheree) Weigum, TN, Greg (Vikki) Weigum, MO, Frank (Misti) Weigum, Billings, MT, and sister, Susan (Alan) Goffena of Roundup, MT.
Services are 11 am on Friday, December 5, 2025 at Wier Funeral Home with graveside to follow at Roundup Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at Roundup Ridge Riders Club.
