Obituary for Catherine H. Hoiland
No more late night emergency room visits, no more doctor visits, no more pain. God’s grace lifted mom home Fri., Oct. 28 after a final short stay at Billings Clinic.
The first born of Michael and Verna Lloyd, Catherine H “Katie” Hoiland was born June 1, 1929, in Roundup, MT, and called Roundup home most of her life. This daughter of a railroad worker and a short order cook was no stranger to work and was never ashamed of hard work to reach her goals in life, a value she soon instilled in her younger brothers. While in high school, she found jobs for herself and her brothers at the American Theater. Following graduation, she went to work as a switchboard operator for the telephone company.
On June 1, 1950, she married Joe Hoiland, and together they raised their five children. For 62 years they honored their wedding vows, teaching others the true meaning of “in sickness and in health.” In 1980 she became not only dad’s lifelong partner but also his business partner when they help found Roundup Cable TV, a business they owned and operated for 18 years.
Their sense of adventure took them far and wide, with some of their fondest memories coming from the Valley of the Sun in Tempe, AZ; declining health brought them to their final home at Autumn Springs in Billings.
Mom’s pleasures were simple: time spent in her garden whether planting or weeding, time spent visiting friends and neighbors, time spent sewing both for her family and for the mission children of AZ, time spent with family, especially her great-grandchildren with her ever present coloring book and box of crayons. A lifelong member of Roundup’s Emmanuel Baptist Church, her faith never wavered.
Viewing will be Wed., Nov. 2 at Wier’s Chapel from 7-8 p.m.; services will be held Thurs, Nov. 3 at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jason Oakes officiating. Interment will follow at Roundup City Cemetery.
Survivors include Peggy (Gary) Toombs, Bruce (Roma) Hoiland, Brian (Kathy) Hoiland, Mari Hoiland, Paul Hoiland; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Ralph Lloyd of Sacramento, CA, David (Cruz Ann) of Billings, sister-in-law Marjorie Metcalfe of Billings, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and her sister Lucille Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be considered for Roundup Memorial Hospital, Roundup BackPack program or charity of one’s choice.
Condolences may be expressed at wierfuneralhome.com
