Obituary for Byrne Kennedy Gebhardt

Byrne Gebhardt (September 17, 1959 – May 16, 2023)

Roundup, MT – Byrne Gebhardt, 63, passed away peacefully on May 16th surrounded by family. He was born on September 17, 1959 in Roundup, MT to John & Margaret Gebhardt. He lived a life filled with family, friends, hard work, flying, and bowling.

Byrne graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, with a Computer Sciences Degree. While at college, following a recommendation from one of his teachers, he wrote code for the US government at the testing grounds to help pay for college. Following college, he worked at the family business Gebhardt Post Plant and Sawmill. The Sawmill is in its 48th year of operation by Gebhardt’s with the 4th generation currently working in Byrne’s great nephews Logan (15) & Gage (4) and great niece Kaitlyn Gebhardt (13). Byrne spent his time at the Sawmill as a logger, millwright, truck driver, lumber grader, machinist, accountant, etc. He worked as a commercial crop-duster in the Roundup area for ten years or so. He ran a custom cutting haying operation with his nephew Derin and others. In 2001 he purchased and ran the C Lanes bowling alley in Roundup, MT. You will certainly hear many stories from these times as it was the center of entertainment for many. Byrne spent time in Alaska working in the construction industry with sister, Karen, building town houses, storage units, and homes. Later, Byrne returned home and helped run the family ranch.

Byrne was an avid bowler and attended many local tournaments, as well as the American Bowling Congress’ National Tournaments with his brother, Monte, other family members and friends. He got his private pilot certificate, instrument rating, and commercial pilots certificate while in Nevada. He loved to fly and was an accomplished pilot with several thousand hours of flying. He once flew a P-51 Mustang Military Combat Plane. He had lots of hours ferrying airplanes around the southwest with his friend and instructor Bill. He mostly flew single engine airplanes, but had logged time in king air twin turbine, and his radial air tractor. He was considered an “Arm Chair Psychiatrist” always there to listen to a friend or family member and offer his advice. Byrne enjoyed the outdoors and was a certified diver, hunter, and sportsman. You may have also seen him on one of his Harley Davidson Motorcycles throughout the years riding across Eastern Montana and sneaking over to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a time or two with his brother Monte, and friends Frank, Walter.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Karen Gebhardt, Kelly (Darlene) Gebhardt, Loris (George) Smith, Monte Gebhardt, Dana Gebhardt, Lamar (Doug) Dearth, Daryl (David) Forte and Joell (Tom) Doneker along with his numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. He’s preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Gebhardt, and nephew James Smith, (who shared a birthday with Byrne).

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, May 25, 2023 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Roundup MT at 3:00 PM with a reception to follow at the Arcade Bar. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gebhardt Family Scholarships. Checks can be mailed to 20 Skyline Drive Roundup MT 59072.
